Welcome to
Big Sky Montana Views!
The Big Sky Ski Resort is situated in Big Sky,
Montana. This resort has over four hundred inches
of snowfall each year. The highest peak is Lone
Peak at 11,166 feet in elevation. There are 150
designated trails spread over three different
mountains. Big Sky has over 3,800 skiable acres.
Sixty percent of the ski runs are rated as advanced
or expert. About twenty-five percent of the trails
are mid-level in difficulty. Fifteen percent of the
slopes are novice rated. The longest ski terrain,
from the Liberty Bowl to Mountain Mall, is nearly
six miles long. Big Sky has a vertical ski drop
over 4,000 feet in elevation. Normal operating
hours during the winter season is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
daily. This resort tends to have shorter wait times
for ski lifts than other ski areas. Nordic skiing
is available at the Lone Mountain Ranch facility.
When ski slopes close down for the day, the tubing
park opens for family fun. Adults are charged
fifteen dollars an hour and kids, under age ten,
are ten dollars an hour. Daycare for children ages
six months to eight years is available with
reservations. For non-skiers, snow coach and
snowmobile tours into Yellowstone National Park,
sleigh rides, and snowshoeing are offered through
several different area outfitters. Wildlife is
abundant in the surrounding open space. It is
common to see moose, elk, mountain goats, coyotes,
bighorn sheep, and geese. Bison can be found around
the Madison River close to West Yellowstone. Golf,
fly fishing, chairlift rides, tennis, disc golf,
mountain biking, hiking, horseback rides, and rock
climbing are offered summer activities in the Big
Sky area. The Big Sky Ski Resort was planned and
built by Chet Huntley. Chet Huntley, now deceased,
was a famous NBC news television broadcaster. Boyne
USA Resorts, a Michigan-based company, purchased
the resort in 1976. In 2001, Boyne USA began a $400
resort improvement plan to be completed in 2011.
